Everyone Likes Something Different

I first started to make this jewelry more than 10 years ago and one of the biggest things that I realized about my hobby, is that Everyone likes something different.

Far too often as Artists, we become too critical of our own creative works. I know that when I go through the process of designing a new item, pieces get arranged and placed in a location where I can look back at it over the course of several days. This allows me to tweak or alter anything before it is assembled. While I may be happy with the process as it is growing and how it looks upon the finished assembly, sometimes when I place it next to other items I have done, I judge it harshly.

I have noticed over the years that the items that I make, every single one of them, are waiting for an owner. Much like someone’s soul-mate, every item has peaked someone’s interest, like an electric spark. They may even be on the other side of the aisle and as they walk by with their husband or significant other pushing them to hurry them past a jewelry stall, they will look over and see something that catches their eye.

Is it because the pendant was made from an antique pocket watch and it resembles the pocket watch that your grandfather had? You remembered spending time with him when you were a child and thought of how you would look up and see him checking this watch or even letting you hold it.

Is it because the pendant is made with a Monarch butterfly wing and your favorite time of year is the summer when butterflies are out en-masse as they fly around the fields surrounding your home or your favorite park?

Or could it be the reason is that the pendant has a antique watch movement with a metal wing on it? The metal wing resembles an angel wing and reminds you of a loved one now in heaven and that the watch part is a constant reminder that time is always ticking.

When we see artwork, whether it is a painting or a sculpture, if we are moved from it, then we feel as though we need to have it. We want to possess it so that we can have those feelings whenever we want. The jewelry I have made, allows you to have those emotions and not only own and keep the item that brings up those memories for you, but also allows you to wear it. That way, these emotions and feelings will always be close to your heart.
